It’s the intriguing tagline that crops up at the exact juncture of Baby-Boomer-Intern Robert De Niro finally breaking the ice with his boss the Millennial-Successful-Ecommerce-Entrepreneur Hathaway in the 2015 released movie – The Intern.
The tagline (and so much so the specific scene) not only goes to signify how the naïve De Niro opening his first FB account in 2015!, but also ironically depicts how the Digital Era has democratized new possibilities for all people irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, educational status, socio-economic background and any other so-called disadvantage.
The scene depicts Hathaway’s change of perception from the original hatred for Ben (De Niro) and how the latter helps her to overcome her only problem in an otherwise enviable life – Her marriage potentially headed for a disaster.
In this blog, I am making an attempt to connect the movie’s scene (characters & plot) as an anecdote to how internet can truly bring endless possibilities for literally anyone looking to bounce back from their notion as being a mere spent cartridge. And at the same time how they can add meaningful value into lives of others.
Be it an economic recession snatching away your livelihood in your mid 40s or those forbearing negativity of being an insignificant homemaker or that haunting past of escaping that war ravaged country or that of struggling through getting a college degree; there are a million inspirations on how Internet decks out great options to script a fresh beginning for yourself.
Internet – Potpourri of Resources:
There’s never been more access to resources – From earning a new degree to learning how to do terrace gardening or even to raise money from angel investors for your successfully running start-up, you have it all freely available on the internet, that you can make use of. All the pre-internet era entry barriers are completely destroyed; making it absolutely possible for anyone to achieve anything at any stage of his life.
Content Marketing & You:
It doesn’t take a graduate degree from Carnegie Melon anymore, even a Youtube tutorial on a trivial topic like fostering pet cats can potentially garner thousands of followers and evolve to creating multiple tutorial series in the same line of topic. There’s nothing called trivial in this world and the demand for good content is the real testimony for the same. There are plethora of ways to turn one’s niche knowledge into something of value for an entirely huge set of people who are wanting to learn from.
There’s never been more creative options to bring out the inner talents in the best possible way that is both engaging and informative. Take anything and you can convert that into a lively video or a peppy image that can instantly strike a chord with the intended recipients.
There’s never been a better opportunity to shine as a person by simply being one’s truly authentic self – How many such annoying mockery you had to put up for being a social misfit just because of your weak English language command? Well on the other hand if you are truly brilliant in your native language – Hindi, then there’s a great opportunity to join hands with the likes of Apple, Amazon, Google, etc., who are looking for your services to feed their virtual assistants (Alexa or Siri) with Hinglish vocabulary!
Yup, you heard that right, you can be a part of the linguistic team of Amazon, working on making Alexa to understand 230 Million new smartphone users, who prefer voice commands in their native English (Hinglish) than text based input!
This is just a point to illustrate the opportunity size of turning your authentic strengths into a money spinning model.
Online Marketing – The Level Playing Field:
There’s never been a better level playing and cost effective means to attract people who are exactly looking for what you have to offer. With all those various targeting options available in the Search and Social Media world, you can exactly narrow down to targeting those who are both actively looking consume and are in exact need of your offering, which could be anything from “how to cook tasty South Indian Biryani” to “homemade quilling earrings”.
With a few thousands of advertising budget, you can be a potential competitor of a big brand with millions of advertising budget, and still attract a good number of customers for what you have got to sell. All of that made as simple as a click of a button, and to reiterate cost effective, with options like SEO, SEM, FB Ads, etc.,
Claim Your Authority:
There’s never been a shortest distance between yourself and elitist – Gone are the days where you have to be a well-known (established) person to become an influencer in a chosen line, like a movie or music critic of your preferred genre.
If you are a movie buff or culture vulture of desi music, then practically you can right away start writing your views on recent releases and attract the millions of people who looking for reviews before they consume similar stuff. And in the process you can make a good fortune as well, if you manage to draw a good following (of course with good quality reviews that you write, which helps people to decide).
This just goes to say that whatever be the line of interest, now it’s all within the grabs to express your views and in the process illuminate many others who could find your expertise useful.
It needn’t be a pursuit to make money, get rich & famous, etc., Internet has plenty of options to discover and pursue one’s interest and suddenly start feeling an immense gratitude of manifesting the self-worth that’s been absent in life. There’s no need to live an obscure life, instead can add immense value in other’s life by helping people with your experience!
