Demonstrating positive attitude at work is one of the most important things you should aim at.
Positive attitude brings with it a slew of benefits as below:
1. Bright chances of getting Promoted
2. Better leverage to negotiate for a raise
3. Attracting higher and important responsibilities
4. Enjoying cordial relationships with superiors, peers and subordinates alike
5. Last but not the least, a magical ability to getting things done from others
The single most important experience of portraying a positive attitude at work is – everyday is a Sunday!
Yes, it is quite possible (& simple) to attain a holiday mindset on a perfect start or middle of week.
Yet, why do we struggle to drag ourselves out of bed?
Why do we hate being questioned in the meetings?
Why do we keep flipping the calendar for the next Friday?
What is more special about a Sunday that you fail to notice the same speciality on a Tuesday?
How to encourage positive attitude at work?
Maybe you are feeling that on a typical Sunday, everything is under your control as you are surrounded by your family or friends. People around you are understanding, empathetic and loving.
On the contrary, when at work, you feel under pressure of being controlled by others. You see people as competitors, dictators or bystanders.
You feel under a constant pressure; to wear a mask that satisfies people who decide on your future or dodge the criticism or protect the position.
And does this helplessness result in you not keeping a positive attitude at work?
But then, I am sure you realise that Sundays are just 1 of the 7 days of a week and what happens with the other 6 days is sheer exposure to a negative mindset and constant pressure.
So it clearly means that when you feel under control you feel positive and vice versa.
Now how do we correct this situation?
You may be doing a lot of things to pep up yourself, such as reading books on self-development, paying the joining fees at the nearest yoga centre, indulging in some kinda after hours sports, etc.,
You may even be updating your CV with latest certifications or courses so that you can attract better jobs elsewhere.
All these are without doubt good to have. They add value to your overall wellbeing in one way or the other.
However, what is that one common deficiency in these techniques? Have you wondered about why despite doing any number of things, the Mondays are still dreadful?
That is because, you are doing all of these outside the realms of your workplace. You still have to deal with the gruelling external forces at workplace during the 9 – 6!
Let me show a simple technique that I have been following for quite sometime now and how it gives me an unperturbed control, despite any kind of external situation.
It is a secret that I am going to reveal today, which takes no great effort or discipline to do but if practiced daily will transform your mindset and help you develop a positive attitude.
Each morning when I reach office, the first thing I do is open my Whatsapp profile pic and zoom in to see the large sized image of my daughter posing gleefully.
I clicked this pic last winter in the park area of the society I live in.
When I dragged my daughter to the park to pose for a pic wearing this new dress, she was all shy and cold (wearing a half sleeve in Delhi winter).
Yet, she emits a smile that is cute and also reflects a sense of happiness that she is being provided with all luxuries in life for her age. I mean a good education, shelter, neighbourhood and health.
The assured feeling that hides behind that smile, a feeling which conveys that you are here to provide for me, is a profound message that is conveyed in that smile.
The message instills a sense of duty and direction in me that I have to safeguard my daughter’s confidence, come what may.
Initially, when I used to do the daily viewing of this pic, I use to have a thought run at the back of my mind as to am I getting unnecessarily sentimental. Right through my childhood, “being sentimental” was constantly talked down as being fake.
But over a period of time, as I continued this morning ritual, I slowly started encoding the hidden message behind the picture, I-am-confident-that-you-are-here-to-provide-for-me, that I started connecting to a larger purpose.
The more I get connected to a life’s purpose, the more I grew stronger and the less all other distractions affecting my mood. Hence the natural outcome is demonstrating positive attitude!
It was all magically falling into place with just one act. That one act was enough to get the mind automatically tuned to fetch all other things such as “connecting to a larger purpose”.
All you have to do is this – choose a picture from your past that you love, keep it handy (in these times, handy means keeping it on Mobile phone) and keep seeing it daily when you start your day.
This is all you have to do.
Gradually you’ll also start encoding the hidden message from the picture.
You need not be married to have your daughter’s pic, you need not have girlfriend, you need not be photogenic, no excuse whatsoever.
It can be any picture from your past, that gave you loads of happiness at that moment.
Demonstrate positive attitude, despite all odds, as you hold the control of your mood and no one else.
